VinFast is an up-and-coming car manufacturer. After having just started delivering cars to the U.S. market in 2023, the VF8, their first EV to showrooms, has had some growing pains. The author, who has driven a VF8 before, said, “… Yet its feature set is good, it’s comfortable enough and hasn’t left her stranded, so her review is pretty positive. It’s a good reminder that, for most people, a car doesn’t have to be the most competitive or flawless vehicle to be satisfying to own.”

She notes that most Vinfast owners are happy with their, too, appreciating the styling, tech features and uniqueness of the VF8. She likes that it has a “Dog Mode” to protect her pup, Rafiki, something that’s still not available on most EVs. Plus the ZF-made highway driving assistance tech works well, keeping her centered in the lane while still allowing her to steer wide of big trailers and semis. Along with comfortable seats and cool ambient lighting, the ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) suite makes the VF8 a decent road trip car.”

VinFast VF8 vs Volkswagen ID.4

The 2024 VinFast VF8 is starting to hit great strides in the American market with some of the strongest lease and purchase options available to electric vehicle customers. It’s no surprise that buyers are starting to see what makes the VF8 a great choice, whether it be the 10-year, unlimited-mile battery warranty that no other automaker has or its smartphone app that makes paying for charging and scheduling maintenance easier than ever. It might also be the company’s unique deal with Sony to bring their movie and TV show collection into VinFast vehicles that can be watched using the vehicle infotainment displays and smart devices while in VinFast cars.

The VF8 also has a head-up display as standard, which is not available on any of the ID.4 trim levels.

Less Range Anxiety, More Range Calmness

Range is always a talking point with EVs, especially newer EV vehicles that have not been on the market long. However, this is an area where the VinFast VF8 does well for potential buyers. The base model Eco trim has an EPA-estimated 264 mile range, which is quite a bit more than the standard Volkswagen ID.4 with just 209 miles and rear-wheel drive. Opting for the ID.4 AWD Pro gets the range to jump to 263. Unlike the Volkswagen, which can only tow up to 2,700 lbs in higher trim levels, all VF8 models can tow up to 4,000 lbs when properly equipped.

Not Flashy Speed, But Plenty Fast

While many EVs try to be flashy with extremely fast 0-60 times, the VF8 is not meant to be a speed demon like some. That being said, it will still get up and go, with a 0-60 mph time of only 5.0 seconds, which is much faster than the Volkswagen ID.4’s 7.3 seconds.

A Warranty That Wins

In the end, buyers who are worried about investing in a young EV brand like VinFast can rest assured that there is no other automaker that offers a better warranty, including Volkswagen. The ID.4 has a 4-year, 50,000-mile warranty that covers that vehicle from bumper to bumper with an extra 8-year, 100,000-mile battery warranty. The VinFast VF8, on the other hand, has a 10-year, 125,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and a 10-year, unlimited-mile battery warranty.
