More tech reviewers are getting behind the wheels of various electric cars, and while most of them have been big fans of Teslas and the like for some time now, some of them have started opening their minds to newer vehicles like the VinFast VF8. Mark Linsangan, a tech YouTuber with over 150,000 subscribers and a Tesla Model 3 owner, recently took a VF8 for a spin and explained why it may very well be his next car purchase.

A Tech Reviewer Who Likes Cars

Since Mark isn’t a car reviewer, he has a unique perspective from the tech side of things. This also means that he isn’t jaded or cynical when reviewing the VinFast. Instead of approaching the review like a professional car reviewer who has driven hundreds of vehicles, Mark sees the VF8 as something that needs to fit his technological lifestyle.

A Tesla Owner Who Loves the VF8

Because Mark leases a Tesla Model 3, he brings a unique perspective and finds multiple things that he prefers about the VF8. One thing includes the 360-degree camera view, along with the ability to switch the camera view angles. There’s even a tow view that makes it easier to line up and back your VinFast up to whatever you want to tow. Mark remarked how his Tesla does not have the ability to see 360 degrees around the car; the VF8 has this as standard on the base Eco trim. He also loved the fact that under 9 mph, the front camera will automatically display an image of the left or right on the screen, depending on which turn signal you have on.

The Perfect Infotainment and HUD Displays

The wonderful and bright 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen also doubles as your gauge cluster. As a professional tech reviewer, Mark Linsangan gets to see dozens of devices with amazing screens every year, from laptops to tablets and, of course, smartphones. So when he says that the “massive” and bright infotainment screen and head-up display (HUD) are some of his favorite features, he means it. He loved the standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, something Tesla doesn’t offer in its cars. He especially appreciated the turn-by-turn navigation popping up on the HUD to keep your eyes on the road. Mark called it all a seamless operation. He noted that the wireless charger did not have a problem with phones that have big camera bumps.

Next on his list was the fact that you can charge so many devices at once. There are two USB-C ports for the driver and front passenger, and two more for rear occupants. There’s also a 90-watt charging port in the rear of the VF8 between the air vents and other ports. This setup makes it convenient to charge power-hungry laptops and other devices easily from any seat in the car.

VinFast Is Listening and Making Meaningful Updates

Since Mark was able to drive one of the first-ever production VF8 models from last year, he lauded VinFast for listening to customer feedback and providing this latest model with excellent updates, including the great throttle response, sharper suspension with better turning characteristics, and a much more comfortable and smoother ride over any type of surface, especially rough pavement.

VinFast VF9 vs Tesla Model X

When it comes to electric SUVs, Tesla is kind of the OG in this department with the Model X. It has enjoyed a number of years as the premier luxury electric SUV. However, that’s slowly but surely been changing since its debut in 2015. With vehicles like the VinFast VF9, the Model X is aging in comparison. Or is it? Let’s compare the two in this week’s versus.

Meet The Tesla Model X

Like the VinFast VF9, the Tesla Model X only has two flavors for buyers: the Model X and the Model X Plaid. Unlike the VF9, though, it is pricey. How pricey? Well, here’s where it gets weird: Tesla says the Model X has a starting price of $65,990… but then, in fine print, it mentions, “Includes any applicable federal tax credits and estimated gas savings.” So, that means you can add back the $7,500 federal tax credit to better understand the base price, but what are the estimated gas savings? That’s just deceptive practices. Car and Driver says the Model X starts from $81,630, while MotorTrend says it is priced from $79,990. Tesla says the Model X Plaid retails for $88,490, but the car magazines say $94,990 and $96,630, respectively. Short of calling or going to a Tesla dealer and asking, the price is anyone’s guess.

Powertrain Options

When choosing the base Model X, buyers will get a dual-motor and all-wheel drive with an output of 670 horsepower, according to Tesla, and 713 lb-ft of torque, according to Car and Driver (Tesla does not list torque for the standard model). However, the tri-motor Model X Plaid features a massive 1,020 horsepower and 1,050 lb-ft of torque. Those are wild power numbers, which makes sense since the Plaid can reach 60 mph in just 2.8 seconds, while the standard model is a bit slower at 3.3 seconds. The EPA says that the standard Model X has 329 miles of range with 20-inch wheels. However, Tesla says this number drops to 322 when optioning the 22-inch wheels. The Plaid model has 314 miles of EPA-estimated range with the standard wheels, while the optional 22s will force that range down to about 300 miles.

Meet The Honest VF9

Finally, we come to the star of the evening, the VF9, which is available in either Eco or Plus trim levels and starts from $71,000. Eco models will give buyers a healthy 330-mile driving range, and Plus models offer 291 miles, which makes the VF9 about equal to the Model X. Like the Model X, all VF9 models come standard with all-wheel drive, and both also use dual-motor setups. The 123 kWh battery pack provides 402 horsepower and 457 lb-ft of torque. This gives the VinFast plenty of oomph, with a claimed 0-60 of roughly 6.5 seconds. The VF9 comes standard with a Head-Up Display (HUD), something most other vehicles can’t attest to, so drivers never have to take their eyes off the road to see navigation information, range, music, and more.

Sony RIDEVU Is Amazing

Something that neither Tesla nor any other EV on the market can lay claim to is Sony RIDEVU. RIDEVU allows passengers in the VF9 to watch 2,000 different Sony-owned movies and TV shows either on the main infotainment screen when the vehicle is in park or on any device that is on the in-car WiFi. The 2025 VF9 offers drivers and passengers a 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen display plus six standard USB-A ports with one 90-watt USB-C port, which means two per row. Buyers who opt for captain’s chairs will find two extra USB-A ports in the center console.

Ultimately, which one should you choose, the Tesla Model X or the VinFast VF9? It’s your money, and you should spend it as you see fit. And then, once you look at the battery warranty, you notice it is 150,000 miles versus unlimited miles for the VF9. If you just want to show off at traffic lights, maybe the Tesla is the best car for your needs. However, if you want a vehicle that’s focused on quality over bragging rights, then perhaps the VinFast is the right car.

Instead of developing their electric vehicles around a modern theme that EVs must be radically different looking to conventional gas-powered cars, VinFast took a different approach by looking to famed Italian car designer Pininfarina to craft the essence and beauty of the VF8 and VF9. While some may balk at the idea that a design firm founded in 1930 can dictate the future of EV design, it should be noted that almost every automobile on the road since the 1950s owes some part of its design to a car Pininfarina created. They’ve only styled some of the most influential and beautiful vehicles ever for Ferrari, Lancia, Alfa Romeo, Bentley, Cadillac, Maserati, Volvo, Jaguar, of course VinFast, and more.

A Tesla Warranty Isn’t So Special

A key reason to move away from a Tesla and into a VinFast is the warranty. Tesla’s battery warranty is eight years and anywhere from 100,000 to 150,000 miles, depending on the car you have. That’s weird, don’t you think? So, if you buy a rear-wheel drive Model 3 or Model Y, they only warranty the battery up to 100,000 miles? That seems like it’s saying something about what they believe will happen to that car, because an all-wheel drive Model 3 or Model Y has a 120,000-mile warranty for the battery, and the Models S and X and the Cybertruck carry a 150,000-mile warranty. Makes complete sense… to no one.

VinFast gives every EV in their current lineup a 10-year, unlimited-mile battery warranty, as well as a 10-year, 125,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty. The VF8 Plus can reach 60 mph in roughly 5 seconds, which is faster than a Honda Civic Type R at 5.3 seconds. The Civic Type R is a Bonafide sports car with a hot hatch that can beat Porsche 911s around racetracks. The VF8 beats it in a straight line. The VF9 is also competitive, boasting a 6.5-second 0-60 time. Two of the bestselling gas-powered, 3-row SUVs on the market, the Kia Telluride and Toyota Highlander, both get to 60 mph in about 7-7.5 seconds. Sure, the VinFast vehicles aren’t setting land speed records, but they are also faster than the average traffic.

Sony RIDEVU

One thing that you will not be able to get in any current Tesla model is Sony RIDEVU. RIDEVU allows passengers in the VF8 and VF9 to stream 2,000 different Sony-owned movies and TV shows either on the main infotainment screen when the vehicle is in park or on any device that is connected to the in-car WiFi.

In the end, one of the biggest reasons buyers should look more closely at a VinFast is the price.
